Inspired by Luigi Natoli’s historical novel, the series focuses on the Beati Paoli, a mysterious Sicilian sect in the late 1700s, believed by historians to be the forerunners of the modern Mafia.  The series show runner is Oscar-winning director Giuseppe Tornatore.
